SHILLONG, June 23: Even as the MDC elections are scheduled to be held in 2019, the Congress party workers of Laitumkhrah-Malki MDC constituency have already selected the candidate to contest the election with an aim that the candidate will have plenty of time to introduce himself to the people of the constituency.

The candidate selected by the Congress party workers is James R Lyngwa who is also the president of East Shillong Congress Committee.

According to sources, there were about seven ticket aspirants vying for a Congress ticket and a free hand was given to the party workers of the primary units of the party to select the candidate.

Later, on June 16 this month the party workers casted their votes and after the counting of the votes at the residence of local MLA of East Shillong constituency Ampareen Lyngdoh, James Lyngwa was adjudged the winner as he had garnered more votes than the other ticket aspirants.

As Lyngwa has attained the Congress ticket to contest from the Laitumkhrah-Malki constituency, he will now have to go against Neil Antonio War present United Democratic Party (UDP) MDC who had earlier resigned from the BJP. It may be noted that War had contested the MLA elections earlier this year on a BJP ticket from East Shillong constituency. However, a few months after losing the election he resigned from the party and joined the UDP.
