SHILLONG: A Hungarian tourist, Puskas Zsolt, has gone missing in Meghalaya's Sohra region since March 29, eliciting a massive search operation by authorities.

His disappearance came to the notice of local authorities on April 2 in an official report by the Hungarian Embassy to the police, based on which a report was released on Tuesday.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem furnished information about Zsolt's final movements. Zsolt had checked into a hotel in Laitumkhrah, Shillong, at about 3:45 a.m. on March 29. Subsequently, in the same morning, he checked out from the hotel around 9:00 a.m., took a local taxi, and was left near Sohra at Mawsahew at about noon.

From Mawsahew, Zsolt is said to have set off alone towards Nongriat through Mawkawir with just a backpack. Since then, however, no further contact or sightings have been officially confirmed by authorities.

Following his disappearance, a massive search and rescue mission was initiated. The operation includes Meghalaya police, Home Guards, locals, and volunteers, as well as the deployment of drones to search the thick and hilly terrain of the region, especially popular among tourists for its beautiful trails and living root bridges.

SP Syiem also said that some children had told them they had seen a foreigner resembling Zsolt's description around Mawkawir and Ramdait. Based on these tips, the authorities have carried out extensive searches within the Mawkawir cave system and trekking trails to Nongriat, but as yet, they have been unable to find the missing tourist.

As search efforts continue, concerns for Zsolt’s safety grow, with both local authorities and the Hungarian Embassy closely monitoring developments.
