SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Narpuh Circle, is opposed to the idea of M/s Star Cement holding a public hearing to mine limestone from the existing 9 lakh tonne to 25 lakh tonne annually.
The union has expressed surprised over the decision of the cement company because despite opposition from residents of Lumshnong village, East Jaintia Hills, they continue to move forward to hold the public meeting on March 19.
“The union will stand behind the decision of the village of Lumshnong to oppose the public meeting which is intended to be organized by the company,” Deibormi Dkhar, general secretary, KSU Narpuh Circle said.
He said that the main reason the union is opposing this is because a notification was published in the newspapers without the permission from the village, hence the company has bypassed the agreement it has made with the village.
“The agreement with M/s Star Cement states that the company can’t increase the mining activity of limestone in areas under Lumshnong village without the permission or understanding between the two parties,” he said.
