SHILLONG: Senior working president of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Bindo M Lanong has said that “the party will wait for the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) meeting to discuss the issue of the vacant Speaker’s post to take a consensus decision.”

After the demise of UDP president (Late) Dr. Donkupar Roy, the chair of the Speaker at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has been vacant. As a result, there are many speculations as who will occupy the post and whether the UDP or other political parties within the MDA coalition will field a candidate for the post. He, however, added, “We would like that this post would remain with the party.”

Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had stated that the decision on the Speaker’s post will have to be decided by all the partners in the MDA.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong had also earlier stated the decision on Speaker’s post is not the prerogative of the UDP.

Asked if there was an agreement that the UDP will get the Speaker post, Tynsong said that when they had formed the MDA Government last year, late UDP president, Dr Donkupar Roy had himself opted for the post.
