Meghalaya: 58 Newly Elected MDCs take Oath in KHADC and JHADC

The Khasi and Jaintia Hills region witnessed the swearing-in of 58 newly elected Members of the District Council (MDCs)

SHILLONG: The Khasi and Jaintia Hills region witnessed the swearing-in of 58 newly elected Members of the District Council (MDCs) on Thursday. In the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah administered the oath to 29 MDCs, with UDP leader Titosstarwell Chyne being the only member to take his oath in Khasi.

In KHADC, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah administered the oath to 29 MDCs at the council hall in Shillong. Former KHADC Chief and UDP MDC from Sohra, Titosstarwell Chyne, was the only member to take his oath in Khasi, while the rest opted for English. Among those sworn in were three sitting MLAs—Synshar Roy Kupar Lyngdoh (Nongspung-Sohiong) and Pius Marwein (Langrin) from UDP, and Sosthenes Sohtun (Jirang) from NPP.

The KHADC saw an increase in women representation with the election of Deiti Majaw (Laitumkhrah-Malki) and Aibandaplin L Nonglait (Mylliem) from VPP, and Grace Mary Kharpuri (Nongshken) and Rona Khymdeit (Nongpoh) from NPP. Notably, all 17 MDCs from the Voice of the People Party (VPP) are first-time members, reflecting the party’s growing foothold in district politics.

Meanwhile, in JHADC, West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner administered the oath to 29 MDCs, including JHADC Chief Thombor Shiwat and four former Chief Executive Members—Hambertus Nongtdu, Madonbai Rymbai, Andrew Shullai, and Moonlight Pariat. The council’s composition includes 14 MDCs from NPP, 8 from VPP, 3 from UDP, 3 from Congress, and 1 Independent.
