Shillong: The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) doesn’t seem to know on who are its frontline candidates for the Shillong and Tura Parliamentary seats in spite of its decision to go alone in the Lok Sabha election. The State unit of the BJP has submitted the names of lesser known aspirants for the Shillong seat. They are Arnes Mawrie, Lkahon Kma, B Paslein and Plielad. For the Tura seat, the party has shortlisted Rikman Momin, KC Boro, DD Shira and Thomas Marak.

President of the State BJP, Shibun Lyngdoh when questioned by The Sentinel on Friday stated, “All depends on the national election committee decision. We have forwarded the names of the probable candidates.”

He went to say that the likes of Alexender L Hek or Sanbor Shullai (both MLAs) could be considered by the party for the Shillong seat. The BJP did not contest the just concluded Autonomous District Council elections and many attribute this due to the fear of receding further after the Central Government’s attempt to push the CAB through.

The lack of enthusiasm in the State BJP is perceptible from the lukewarm ambience in the party office.

Insiders within the BJP who spoke to this correspondent on condition of anonymity conceded that the party is going through a distressing time. It’s not because of the State leadership but due to the clumsy thoughts that crept in after all the big talk before the 2018 State elections. Till date, sources said that there is every reason that the party will not consider fielding a candidate in either of the two seats.
