SHILLONG: Meghalaya police recovered the body of Pritish Deb, a local electronics shop owner, almost 24 hours after he went missing after an apparent suicide at Umiam Bridge.

The body was recovered on Monday at 1:50 PM by rescue squads of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Fire and Emergency Services.

The search operation was hindered considerably by bad weather on Sunday, slowing down rescue efforts. But local fishermen in the region said they saw Deb leap into the water, and as a result, authorities ordered an instant search and rescue operation.

Officials, during the probe, found Deb's sling bag on the bridge with his identification papers. It helped his kin establish his identity, and they provided vital details to the authorities. Deb was a resident of Kench's Trace, which is an area in Meghalaya's capital, Shillong.

Local police have launched a full-scale investigation into the events of the incident. Although the reason for Deb's death is yet to be determined, officials are working hard to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to his disappearance.

The police also continue to investigate the motives for the seeming suicide, looking for probable motives or external circumstances that might have driven the tragedy. During the unfolding investigation, the authorities call on anyone with pertinent information to step forward to help uncover the entire context of the event.
