SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday conducted an inspection of the ongoing infrastructure development under the Wahumkhrah Riverfront Development Project, a state-funded initiative aimed at revitalizing one of Shillong’s key rivers.

Describing the project as a significant step forward in terms of environmental conservation and urban beautification, the Chief Minister linked it to the broader city preparation efforts for the upcoming National Games.

“This is a very important project, keeping in mind the environmental aspects, the ongoing beautification of the city, and the upcoming National Games,” Sangma said during the site visit.

The project comprises both infrastructure development and an intensive river clean-up drive. The first phase, currently underway, focuses on restoring the riverfront. The second phase will expand the area to include commercial spaces such as shops and eateries, in addition to providing parking facilities and hostel accommodation.

“We are hopeful to complete Phase 1 of the riverfront at the earliest,” Sangma added.

Calling on public cooperation, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of collective responsibility in preserving Shillong’s natural water bodies. “I urge the citizens to join the government in ensuring we clean and maintain the cleanliness of rivers like the Wahumkhrah. We will work together to achieve our common goal,” he said.

The Wahumkhrah River, which runs through the heart of the city, has long suffered from pollution and encroachment, prompting environmental concerns and repeated appeals for intervention. The current initiative marks a renewed commitment to restoring its ecological and civic value.
