SHILLONG: In a historic first, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma visited Tangmang village under the Pynursla sub-division in East Khasi Hills, becoming the first sitting Chief Minister to set foot in the culturally rich settlement. During his visit, he announced a range of developmental initiatives aimed at empowering local artisans and enhancing rural livelihoods.

Tangmang, established over 200 years ago by settlers displaced by an earthquake, is celebrated for its traditional bamboo craftsmanship. The village extended a warm and vibrant welcome to the Chief Minister, showcasing its heritage through intricate handwoven mats and artisanal bamboo products.

Impressed by the craftsmanship, Sangma immediately directed government officials to procure Tangmang’s bamboo handicrafts in bulk to be used as exclusive gifts for visiting dignitaries.

“This is a memorable visit,” the Chief Minister remarked. “As a government, we believe development must be holistic. While we invest in large infrastructure projects, we must also implement initiatives that directly uplift people’s lives.”

Sangma added, “Supporting our artisans and weavers is a core vision of the MDA government. Through various welfare schemes, including support to Self Help Groups (SHGs) and village organizations, we aim to empower local communities and improve livelihoods.”

The Chief Minister announced the establishment of a Handicraft Training Centre in Tangmang. The centre will be equipped with modern infrastructure, machinery, and residential facilities to enable artisans to receive training under local master craftsmen. He also encouraged the community to expand production, diversify their product range, and explore markets beyond the state.

Sangma interacted with villagers and addressed local concerns. Responding to a request from a student, he assured that a new building for Tangmang Secondary School will be sanctioned under the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund.
