SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma unfurled the National Tricolour and took the Rashtriya Salute at the official Independence Day celebrations held at JN Stadium, Polo Ground, Shillong, on Friday.
In his address, the Chief Minister laid out an ambitious roadmap under “Vision 2032,” positioning Meghalaya as a leading force in India’s development trajectory.
“Meghalaya stands tall as the second fastest growing state in the country, just after Tamil Nadu,” Sangma declared, highlighting the state’s rapid progress. He credited the recognition of Meghalaya’s development model by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the 16th Finance Commission, as well as development partners like the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
The Chief Minister underscored the state’s economic turnaround since 2018. “Our growth rate for 2024-25 at constant prices is 9.66%, nearly double the 5.1% growth recorded in 2018 when the MDA Government took charge,” he said. Meghalaya is the only state in the country to have consistently achieved around 10% growth for three consecutive years post-pandemic, he added.
Presenting comparative growth figures, Sangma said the state’s GDP had nearly doubled from less than Rs 30,000 crore in 2018 to Rs 59,626 crore in 2025. He set an ambitious target of more than doubling it again to Rs 1,40,000 crore by 2032. “This increased GDP will create more jobs, opportunities, and make Meghalaya one of India’s top 10 states,” he asserted.
While acknowledging that public investment had driven growth so far, Sangma called for greater private sector participation in the coming years. “As we move towards 2032, it is time to mobilize the private sector to complement the strong foundation already built,” he said.
Concluding his speech on an optimistic note, Sangma envisioned a future Meghalaya where youth thrive globally, farmers’ produce reaches international markets, athletes win Olympic medals, women lead progress, and every village is connected and empowered.
