Meghalaya Designated As Host For 39th National Games In 2027 As Amit Shah Hands Over IOA Flag

Amit Shah handed the IOA flag to Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, designating the state as the host for the 39th National Games in 2027, coinciding with its 55th statehood anniversary.

SHILLONG: Union Home Minister Amit Shah formally handed over the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) flag to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday, declaring Meghalaya as the host of the 39th National Games in 2027. The ceremony took place at the closing of the 38th National Games in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, in the presence of medalists and members of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association.

Meghalaya performed well at the 38th National Games, earning a total of five medals, one gold, two silver, and two bronze. The opportunity to host the National Games in 2027 coincides with the 55th anniversary of its statehood, a milestone in its sporting history.

At the ceremony, Amit Shah praised Meghalaya for being proactive towards the Games, pointing out that while most of the events will be held in the state, some disciplines will be held in other North Eastern states. He added, "This initiative will significantly promote unity among the North Eastern states."

The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, responded by showing his gratitude and enthusiasm on micro-blogging site X, saying, "Getting the IOA flag is an honor. Our path has been wonderful, and what was a dream is now reality. Meghalaya is honored to host the 39th National Games." This occasion marks a turning point in Meghalaya's sports history, indicating its increasing importance in the sporting landscape of the country.
