SHILLONG: In a chilling twist to what initially appeared to be a straightforward crime of passion, the murder of a newlywed in Meghalaya’s otherwise tranquil Sohra region has taken a more complicated turn. Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang has openly expressed doubt about the alleged love triangle being the sole motive behind the killing, suggesting the possibility of deeper and more sinister factors at play. “Frankly speaking, I still find it difficult to accept the motive that has been given by the accused and it really doesn’t sit very well,” DGP Nongrang said in a candid statement to the press. She questioned how someone could harbour such intense animosity as to plan a murder just days after marriage. “We are looking to see whether there is anything additional, because I find it very difficult to believe that a person would generate so much of animosity that within a couple of days of marriage, literally, you plot to kill the person.”

The initial theory put forward by investigators revolved around a love triangle, but this angle is now under scrutiny. Nongrang hinted that the investigation is far from conclusive. “On the surface, it appears to be a love angle, appears to be the main motive—the love triangle rather—but at the moment we cannot… I mean, personally, I wouldn’t say that could be the only motive,” she said. She further emphasized that the investigation remains a “developing situation,” and that a combination of motives could be involved.

Addressing rumours that valuables were stolen during the crime, the DGP clarified that no jewellery is missing. “The jewellery is not missing. It has been kept by the main accused in a particular place. We will be looking at recovering that jewellery also,” she confirmed.

Nongrang also stated that investigators are considering all possible leads, including statements from a co-passenger who may hold key information. “Yes, we will be looking at all these aspects also,” she said, indicating that the scope of the probe is broadening with each passing day.
