SHILLONG: In a heart-wrenching tragedy, five members of a family, including a one-year-old child, lost their lives when the vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a gorge along the Shillong-Dawki road (NH-40) on Monday. The fatal accident occurred amid heavy fog and poor visibility, compounded by the absence of a protective guard wall in a section of the road currently under construction.
The victims have been identified as Ellida Marbaniang (65), wife of Elbiwell Kharbudon; Mebanador Marbaniang (28), son of Elbiwell; Aimeki Marbaniang (23), also a son of Elbiwell—all residents of Lyngkyrdem Laitlyting; Risbunlang Kurbah (22), wife of Mebanador; and their one-year-and-four-month-old son, Damebanshngain Kurbah—both residents of Mawpunrum in East Khasi Hills.
According to police, the vehicle (registration number ML05 U 4926) veered off the road in a fog-shrouded stretch lacking safety barriers. After an extensive search operation, the car was located severely mangled at the base of the gorge, with all five occupants found dead.
Identification was confirmed through ID cards recovered from the site, which helped authorities trace the families of the deceased.
