SHILLONG: The Siju unit of the Garo Students' Union (GSU) has raised concerns over the deteriorating tourism infrastructure at Siju Caves, demanding a comprehensive audit and immediate corrective measures from the state government to address structural failures and mismanagement.

The union highlighted that multiple projects, including the Rs 2.50 crore Adventure Park, the Rs 3.16 crore Bird Watch Tower and Siju Cave Interpretation Centre with Cafeteria, the Rs 2.19 crore approach road and parking, and the Rs 50.66 lakh solar illumination and landscaping, are already showing signs of deterioration despite the site not yet being officially opened to the public.

In a letter to Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, submitted through the South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, the GSU alleged that the infrastructure developed under the central Swadesh Darshan Scheme has visible cracks, leaks, and other signs of poor construction. "The presence of defects even before the facilities are operational clearly indicates the use of substandard materials and improper execution of work," the union stated.

The GSU also raised concerns about a Rs 75 lakh zipline project, claiming that although the contractor obtained a completion certificate, the project was mysteriously relocated. "As per the RTI reply dated 17.12.2024, the zipline has been shifted to another location with government approval. However, it is nowhere to be seen in and around Siju or even in the entire South Garo Hills district," the union alleged.

Condemning the project's relocation, the GSU criticized the state government's handling of tourism infrastructure. "Such mismanagement not only wastes public money but also tarnishes the reputation of our tourism sector. Tourists and visitors expect well-maintained facilities that enhance their experience, but with such poorly built infrastructure, the safety and satisfaction of visitors are at great risk," the union said. The GSU called for a thorough investigation and demanded that those responsible for negligence be held accountable.
