Shillong: The Khasi Jaintia Christian Leaders’ Forum (KJCLF) expressed strong disapproval on Wednesday regarding the Meghalaya government's decision to inaugurate its first state university with a religious ceremony.

In a statement, KJCLF secretary Edwin H. Kharkongor criticized the government for what he termed an "ostentatious" and "garish" display of Christian religious elements in a secular institution. He pointed out that Meghalaya, known for its extravagant festivals and numerous inaugurations, is unfortunately ranked low in terms of education quality.

While Kharkongor acknowledged the importance of establishing higher educational institutions, he argued that the fanfare surrounding the upcoming inauguration of Captain Williamson Sangma State University on January 13 was inappropriate.

He emphasized that religion is a personal matter and should not interfere with public institutions, as guaranteed by India's secular constitution.

Kharkongor further stated that the resources and efforts of Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma and the state government should be better utilized in improving the educational system's efficiency and addressing the needs of students and teachers.

He stressed that education should foster compassion, respect, and hope for a brighter future. The KJCLF leader concluded by urging both state and central governments to demonstrate a genuine commitment to education.

In another news, President Droupadi Murmu will visit Meghalaya on January 9, 2025, to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of the ICAR Research Complex for the North-Eastern Hill Region at Umiam. The event highlights 50 years of contributions to agricultural research, emphasizing sustainable growth and scientific innovation in the region.
