SHILLONG: Amid swirling rumours of a possible political re-alignment, Leader of Opposition and former Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has firmly dispelled speculation, stating unequivocally that he remains loyal to the Trinamool Congress (TMC)—at least for now.

Speaking to the press, Dr Sangma said, “I am in TMC. As a party in Meghalaya, we are entrusted with the responsibility of serving the people—whether in government or in opposition. Our focus is on protecting public interest.”

His comments come in the wake of increasing whispers about potential party switches, a pattern that has become common in Meghalaya’s dynamic political landscape. Calling such rumours part of a larger strategy by the ruling government, Dr Sangma accused the administration of “predatory politics” aimed at destabilizing the opposition through alleged poaching efforts.

Reiterating his intent to strengthen the TMC from within, the veteran leader referenced the party’s strong showing in recent bye-elections, pointing out that “the ruling party had to deploy significant resources, including the Chief Minister himself, to counter us.”

Dr Sangma also addressed concerns about the party’s fading presence in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills regions. In a candid admission, he acknowledged the lack of groundwork in those areas but expressed optimism: “We couldn’t convert the initial momentum into an enduring support base—but these are lessons that give me hope.”

On broader opposition unity, he maintained that the combined strength of TMC and Voice of the People Party (VPP) remains formidable: “Our numbers are sufficient to expose the ruling dispensation’s irregularities and anti-people programmes.”

In a parting shot, when asked whether other parties had approached him with offers, Dr Sangma said pointedly: “Everyone knows the mind of Mukul Sangma. I think they will think twice before sending any fillers.”
