SHILLONG: As the Union Education Ministry awaits the findings of the two-member investigative committee, Professor P.S. Shukla, vice chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, has extended his leave by fifteen days.

The committee was given the responsibility of looking into claims of poor management and administrative errors at NEHU.

The original deadline for the committee, which included former University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. D.P. Singh and former Assam University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, was set on December 13.

They also spoke with members of the NEHU community while on campus. However, as of right, there has been no update on the report's status.

It should be noted that on November 28, the panel was given a 15-day extension to finish its probe. Prof. Shukla, whose initial leave was scheduled to expire on December 14, had chosen to extend his leave in the absence of any further communication or clarification regarding the committee's conclusions.

Last month, vice-chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla of Meghalaya's North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), who has been on leave had requested that the central government grant him enough safety so that he can return to the institution on December 2.

“NEHUTA created a hooligan just before the start of the 113th meeting of the Academic Council on 25th Oct 2024, thereby not allowing the meeting of the Academic Council. After that, they forcefully entered the office of Registrar and Dy. Registrar thrashed them out and locked their respective offices. They also entered forcefully into the office of the VC, threatening me with the demand for immediate termination of the Registrar and Dy. Registrar,” the NEHU VC alleged.
