Shillong: President Droupadi Murmu will visit Meghalaya on January 9, 2025, to grace the golden jubilee celebration of the ICAR Research Complex for the North-Eastern Hill Region at Umiam.

The event marks 50 years of the institution’s contributions to agricultural research and development in the region. The President’s visit underscores the importance of advancing scientific innovation to support sustainable growth in Meghalaya and the broader northeastern states.

This was also informed to the public by the Meghalaya Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang who announced that President Droupadi Murmu will visit Shillong on January 9 to inaugurate the golden jubilee celebrations of the ICAR Research Complex and the Farmers’ Expo.

The event, scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., will take place at the ICAR complex in Umiam. The President will land at Umroi and return to Guwahati after the function, without traveling to Shillong City.

Following the President’s visit, the Meghalaya cabinet and senior officers will proceed to Sohra for a two-day retreat. Wahlang explained that the retreat, starting with a cabinet meeting on January 10 at noon, will focus on planning and coordination for 2025.

Departments will present their objectives, schemes, and plans for the year, fostering alignment between administrative and political leadership. The retreat will extend into January 11, with the cabinet engaging with self-help groups in rural areas such as Nongriat and Laitkynsew. This interaction aims to understand grassroots initiatives better.

The retreat also aims to enhance communication and confidence between departments and ministers, ensuring a unified vision for governance in 2025. Wahlang highlighted that discussions would include outcomes from the Chief Secretaries’ Conference chaired by the Prime Minister in December.

He emphasized the importance of conveying this vision cohesively from top-level leadership to grassroots implementation. If successful, this year’s retreat could set a precedent for similar exercises in the future, fostering stronger coordination across government levels.
