Shillong: Meghalaya's Education Minister, Rakkam A. Sangma, recently shared updates regarding the establishment of the Shillong campus of the Captain Williamson Sangma State University.
The education department has submitted a request to the government for land allocation to set up a permanent campus. While the government has already announced the creation of the Shillong campus, the department is currently searching for a temporary location.
One potential site under consideration is the NIT campus, which has been vacated, though it belongs to NEHU. For the long-term campus, the department is seeking land from the Urban Affairs department.
Sangma also addressed concerns regarding the affiliation of colleges with the state university. He clarified that no institution is being forced to affiliate with the new university, emphasizing that the Chief Minister had already stated that it is entirely up to each institution to decide.
The university has reached out to all colleges for discussions, underscoring that the creation of the state university aims to ease administrative challenges for local institutions. He noted that the central universities often impose strict rules, such as the requirement for students to take the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), which can be difficult for state institutions to comply with.
The state university would operate according to state rules, while still adhering to UGC guidelines on matters like admissions. Several colleges have expressed interest in affiliating, and the process is ongoing, with various regulatory procedures to be completed before final decisions are made.
