SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has set its sights firmly on the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections next year, with party president Metbah Lyngdoh declaring the move after a series of strategic consultations with the regional leadership. “We have discussed this with the friends in Garo Hills with the last meeting with them. The UDP leaders in Garo Hills are reviewing the political situation in Garo Hills and yes we will contest,” affirmed Lyngdoh, signalling the party’s intent to stake its claim in a region long dominated by rival forces.

Underscoring the party’s multipronged organisational offensive, UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne revealed a flurry of groundwork across key political theatres. “Recently we had three meetings, one meeting for the Shillong City and the Shillong City has taken up the task by visiting each and every constituency in five constituencies and two constituencies we have not yet visited. UDP has reorganised the party in these five constituencies,” he stated. Chyne detailed how the leadership, led by himself and the president, conducted a comprehensive stock-taking in Ri Bhoi district, meeting every district president and office bearer to assess on-ground political realities.

“Second meeting held last week in Ri Bhoi district where myself, president and other central leaders we have visited Ri Bhoi district and met all the District president and the office bearers of the district of all the constituencies in Ri Bhoi and to take stock of the situation in Ri Bhoi district and another meeting was attended by the president himself in Garo Hills and to take stock of the situation in Garo Hills also, we have decided to strengthen the party in Garo Hills and reorganise and especially to prepare for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections to be held next year,” Chyne added, making it clear that the UDP is orchestrating a calculated and aggressive political expansion strategy.
