SHILLONG: In a development that has set the political grapevine abuzz, Dr. Jemino Mawthoh, General Secretary of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has resigned from the party, bringing to an end a long-standing association of over 15 years.

The sudden resignation of the seasoned politician has sparked intense speculation about his next political move, with rumours suggesting possible overtures from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling National People's Party (NPP).

Confirming the development, UDP Working President Paul Lyngdoh said, "All I know is that he (Dr Jemino Mawthoh) has tendered his resignation." While there has been no official statement yet from either Dr Mawthoh or the party's central leadership, sources within the UDP confirmed that the resignation was submitted to party president Metbah Lyngdoh.

Dr Mawthoh, a former legislator and the consensus candidate of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, has remained tight-lipped about his decision. However, insiders suggest that multiple political parties are actively courting the respected leader, drawn by his mass appeal and strong grassroots presence. His silence has only deepened the intrigue surrounding his political future.
