SHILLONG: Mendipathar (MNDP) Railway Station in Meghalaya achieved a historic milestone by unloading its first-ever freight rake on February 4th, 2025. The rake, consisting of 21 wagons carrying food grains for the Food Corporation of India, arrived at the station at 9:20 am and was ready for unloading by 9:40 am. This marked the first time a goods train had been unloaded in Meghalaya.
Since its opening on August 29th, 2014, Mendipathar has been the state’s first railway station. It features four tracks and a spacious goods circulating area for handling freight.
This achievement is a significant step in boosting the local economy and facilitating the smooth movement of essential goods within the region.
The success of the unloading process demonstrates the station’s preparedness, with the required services such as trucks, labor, and expertise in goods handling available. Efficient goods movement plays an essential role in improving the overall performance of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).
NFR is focused on enhancing logistics efficiency in the region through better technology and faster movement of goods. Mendipathar Railway Station is expected to play a vital role in freight transport for Meghalaya, contributing to the state’s growth and strengthening the railway network in Northeast India.
