National Voters Day celebrated

Shillong: Along with the rest of the country, National Voters' Day was celebrated here today at Ward's Lake which was attended by Additional Chief Secretary H Marwein as chief guest.

Addressing the gathering during the inaugural session, Marwein said, "We are privileged to be a part of the largest democracy in the world but this democracy becomes meaningless unless the people actively participate in the election process without fear."

He added that the State Election Commission has been working tirelessly to ensure that every eligible person participates in the elections and he urged the electorates to exercise their franchise wisely and ethically. He particularly urged first time voters to be wise and informed while voting as their votes will decide their future.

Earlier, the chief guest also launched the 1950 VVIP (Voter Verification & Implementation Programme) helpline through which electorates can confirm/verify their names and obtain other details. Prizes for various competitions including the 'Run For Democracy', that was held earlier in the morning, were also distributed at the function.

Among others, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills and District Election Officer, M War Nongbri and Additional CEO, RP Marak were also present during the occasion.

The CRPF North Eastern Sector HQ, Shillong, also observed National Voters' Day. The function was attended by Prakash D, IPS, IGP, NES CRPF, Sham Chand, DIG, NES CRPF, Ram Sukhpal Singh, DIG, NES, CRPF, Prashant Dar-Commandant, NES CRPF, among others.
