SHILLONG: The North East Forum of Indigenous People (NEFIP), an umbrella of civil society organizations of the region opposing the reintroduction of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, will be holding a sit-in-protest in the Northeast on October 3.

In this regard, the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisation (CoMSO) will observe the sit-in protest in the State. The CoMSO will stage the protest from 11 am to 5 at the statue of Kiang Nongbah Barik, Shillong.

It may be mentioned that this decision to hold the protest against the proposed reintroduction of the CAB was taken at the first ever central executive council of the NEPIF held on September 25 at Kohima. “This action of the BJP- led government at the Centre is like trampling on the rights of the indigenous people of the Northeast despite our opposition to the CAB,” general secretary of the NEPIF, Robertjune Kharjahrin said.

Meanwhile, the NEPIF has also threatened to take up the matter with the United Nations Organisation, if the Centre insists on passing the CAB.

If this Bill is passed in Parliament, illegal migrants from minority communities like Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian coming from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who entered India till December 31, 2014 will then be eligible for Indian citizenship.
