SHILLONG: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong will accomplish yet another historical feat, this time owing to its dedicated endeavour in the field of medical education.
According to a press release, the regulatory body that regulates medical education and medical professionals in India, the National Medical Commission (NMC), has declared NEIGRIHMS to be a Regional Centre for Medical Education Technologies (RC-MET). At the stroke of 11 am on July 11, Dr Aruna Vanikar, president of the Under Graduate Medical Education Board of the NMC, will inaugurate the Regional Centre at NEIGRIHMS. The RC will serve as the resource centre for training the faculty members of medical colleges in the North-Eastern and Eastern region of the country, allotted by the NMC.
On this occasion, Dr Aruna Vanikar will also release a book titled 'English-Khasi Translation in Medical Practice with Khasi-Hindi Transliteration and Phonetics'. The book, conceived and published by the Department of Medical Education, NEIGRIHMS with technical and literary contributions from its faculty, is an English-Khasi translation of commonly used terms in the health-care sector. It is intended to empower students and health-care professionals to communicate effectively with patients.
Since a vast majority of the patients visiting NEIGRIHMS converse in Khasi and the medical courses offered by NEIGRIHMS attract students from all over the country, this book is expected to be of immense help to non-Khasi speaking students and health-care professionals in delivering the best possible care.
Under the stewardship of the Director, Prof Nalin Mehta, who is a renowned medical teacher and a domain expert in medical education technologies, NEIGRIHMS is committed to achieving the NMC mandate of producing highly competent 'Indian Medical Graduates' not only at NEIGRIHMS , but every medical college in the region.
The faith reposed in NEIGRIHMS by the NMC is a feather in the cap not only for NEIGRIHMS, but for the people of Meghalaya and the entire Northeastern region which it serves.
