Shillong: Meghalaya Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal assured that the state’s power scenario is stable and there are no immediate plans to impose load shedding. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Mondal emphasized the government’s intent to ensure uninterrupted power supply, particularly during the ongoing examination season.

“However, as and when the situation arises, we will take a call on that. But our intention is to see the examination season pass off without any load shedding,” he said.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by the power department, Mondal highlighted the unpredictable surge in transformer load during the new year. “In the new year, you see the quantum of sudden load factor in every transformer is quite high, and sometimes it is very difficult for us to determine how much additional load will be added during a particular period,” he explained.

The minister reiterated that the current power scenario remains comfortable, and there is no plan for load shedding at the moment. “We are already planning to see that the examination period for the children also goes without any load shedding,” he assured.

Mondal clarified that instances of power cuts reported in the state are linked to ongoing repair and renovation works as well as the implementation of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). He noted that such activities require temporary shutdowns for the upgrading of substations and transformers. “This is the season where we can maximize our efforts to ensure all substations and transformers are properly maintained. If lights are off for some time, it is due to repair and renovation or new works under RDSS, and not due to load shedding,” Mondal stated.

He further appealed to consumers for understanding, assuring that technical issues would be promptly addressed. “We are not going for immediate load shedding, but this is the best time to carry out essential maintenance and upgrades to improve power reliability,” he added.
