Shillong: Two Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) cadres surrendered to Meghalaya Police after fleeing from Bangladesh, a move that strongly indicates the banned outfit’s continued presence across the border.

Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Home (Police), Prestone Tynsong, on Wednesday confirmed that the police are alert to this development. While refraining from revealing further details, Tynsong expressed confidence that HNLC members would eventually realise the futility of their path.

“They will one day understand that their so-called ‘career’ is leading nowhere,” Tynsong remarked. “Take the example of these two young men who surrendered. They realised in time that they needed to rebuild their lives. Both are below 30 and have now chosen to return to the mainstream.”

Urging others to follow suit, the Deputy Chief Minister made a direct appeal to remaining HNLC members to abandon the insurgent path and reintegrate with society.

In a development raising fresh concerns over the cross-border presence of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), two of its cadres have surrendered to Meghalaya Police after fleeing from Bangladesh—a move seen as a significant indicator of the outfit’s ongoing operations from across the border. Dibarius Jyrwa (32) and Ridor Lyngdoh Nonglait (30) laid down arms before the Superintendent of Police in Eastern West Khasi Hills district, marking a crucial step in the government’s efforts to encourage insurgents to return to the mainstream.
