SHILLONG: In a significant development in the murder case of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, the Meghalaya Police on Tuesday recreated the entire crime scene at Sohra (Cherrapunji), where the gruesome killing allegedly took place. All five accused, including Raja’s wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, were brought to the site as part of the investigation to retrace the events leading to his murder.
Raja Raghuvanshi was murdered on May 23 while on his honeymoon in Meghalaya. His decomposed body was discovered on June 2 in a deep gorge near Weisawdong Falls. The police have arrested Sonam, her alleged lover Raj, and three others — identified as Vishal, Anand, and Akash — in connection with the crime.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem stated that the reconstruction of the crime was successful and has given investigators a clearer picture of how the murder was carried out. “The SIT today visited several places to re-play how the accused did it. We started from the parking lot where they had kept their two-wheelers, then moved to the viewpoint, and determined the positions of each person just before the murder,” said SP Syiem.
According to the police, Raja was struck three times — first by Vishal, followed by Anand, and finally by Akash. A second machete used in the attack is still missing. The police also revealed that Sonam was present at the scene and had allegedly signalled for the killing to begin.
“The first hit was by Vishal, and it was a hard, lethal blow. Sonam was standing in front and gave the signal to proceed. Raja was behind her, and Vishal was to his right. When blood began to flow after the first hit, Sonam ran away as Raja screamed. His body was later thrown into the gorge by three of the accused,” SP Syiem added.
