Shillong: In a firm assurance to hawkers at Khyndailad, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong clarified that the government’s relocation drive is a well-intentioned step to support, not penalize, street vendors.

Speaking to the media, Tynsong said the initiative is being implemented in the larger interest of the hawkers, with the administration providing both logistical and financial assistance to ease the transition into designated vending zones. “It is not that we wanted to victimize the hawkers. In fact this is done for their own good. You will not find a government which is really thinking seriously about the interest of the hawkers. Shifting allowance of Rs 10,000 is being provided and plus once they shifted to the designated place, again initially for five months, Rs 2000 per month will be paid to concerned eligible hawkers,” he stated.

The deputy CM expressed disappointment over the resistance shown by some hawkers, despite the government’s efforts to extend tangible support. He noted that the town vending committee — which includes hawker representatives — has been actively involved in formulating the relocation plan and has conducted multiple meetings to fine-tune the process.
