SHILLONG: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced the approval of Rs 951.27 crore for the construction of the Tura Bypass in Meghalaya. Sharing the development on his official social media platform, the minister stated that the bypass will stretch from NH-127B to NH-217 and will be built as a two-lane road with paved shoulders. The 29.03-kilometre-long project is located in the Tura district and holds significant strategic importance.

Gadkari highlighted that NH-217, formerly known as NH-51, serves as a crucial link between Guwahati and Dalu—a key inland customs check-post situated on the India-Bangladesh international border. The new bypass aims to improve regional connectivity and streamline cross-border transportation.

He explained that the bypass will begin near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and end at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217. It is designed to bypass the existing route of NH-217, which currently passes through the congested urban centre of Tura town. The present alignment faces issues such as narrow roads and high traffic volumes, leading to frequent bottlenecks and reduced mobility.

The minister emphasized that the project will not only ease traffic congestion in Tura but also improve road safety by diverting through traffic away from local routes. The bypass is expected to significantly enhance travel efficiency and contribute to the overall infrastructure development of the region.
