Assam Rifles celebrates 63rd Raising Day at Aizawl

AIZAWL: To celebrate its 63rd Raising Day, 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), organized a series of events including Special Sainik Sammelan, Mandir Programme celebrations at Officers and JCO Mess and Bada Khana for all ranks which saw participation by families and children in various sports and cultural activities here on Saturday.

According to a press release, the event was attended by Brigadier Digvijay Singh, SM, DIG 23 Sector Assam Rifles, 80 families and 250 troops of Assam Rifles. The events were conducted with full enthusiasm and vigour.

LECTURE CONDUCTED: According to another press release, the Lunglei Battalion and Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), conducted lectures on 'World Suicide Prevention Day' at Tuipang in Sentifiang village and Battalion Headquarter at Lunglei on Saturday.

A total of 372 soldiers and 62 local residents of Lunglei, Tuipang and Sentifiang villages attended the lecture, the aim of which was to raise awareness about suicide prevention. Objectives were to promote self-empowerment so as to address self-harm and suicide. These can be achieved through capacity building of healthcare providers, positive and informative messaging aimed at the general population and at-risk groups such as young people, and facilitating open discussion on mental health at home, schools, workplaces etc.

Those contemplating or affected by suicide attempt were also encouraged to share their stories and seek professional help. The awareness programme also addressed ways to cope up with feelings of suicidal tendencies as and when it arises in anyone's mind. An effort was made to spread the message that "living is the solution, sucide is not".

The residents of the villages applauded Assam Rifles for addressing such a sensitive issue which is very prevalent in present-day society. The local residents expressed their gratitude by taking a resolve to further spread awareness on this sensitive and less-spoken issue among others as well.
