AIZAWL: Aizawl is set to become the fourth northeastern capital to be connected to India’s railway network within the next five months, officials announced on Tuesday.

The Bairabi-Sairang broad gauge railway line, spanning 51.38 kilometers, is nearing completion under the supervision of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). The project, worth over Rs. 8,210 crore, will place Aizawl alongside Guwahati, Agartala, and Naharlagun on the list of northeastern capitals with railway connectivity.

NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, confirmed the project's progress, highlighting the recent inspection by NFR General Manager (Construction), Arun Kumar Chaudhary. Chaudhary, along with senior officials, reviewed the ongoing works at key locations, including the construction of Kawnpui and Mualkhang stations, the Sairang station yard, and the extensive bridge and tunnel infrastructure along the route.

The railway line is divided into four sections — Bairabi-Hortoki, Hortoki-Kawnpui, Kawnpui-Mualkhang, and Mualkhang-Sairang. The Bairabi-Hortoki section became operational in July 2024, while efforts are underway to complete the remaining sections at the earliest.

During his visit, Chaudhary also inspected railway operations in Tripura, conducting a window trailing inspection from Sabroom to Agartala. The Sabroom station, located near the Bangladesh border, plays a vital role in boosting logistics and trade in the region. He also met with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha to discuss ongoing infrastructure projects to improve connectivity and economic opportunities.
