AIZAWL: In a major drug bust in Champhai town, south Mizoram, three people, including a woman, were apprehended for carrying heroin worth Rs 83.7 lakh. The operation was carried out by the Assam Rifles on Tuesday in coordination with the Excise and Narcotics Department.

Those arrested have been named as Samuel Lalchawimawia, 25, Lalchhanhima, 20, and Rebecca Laldingliani, 23. The police seized 119 grams of heroin which the accused had concealed. It is part of efforts to curb drug trafficking activities in the border region as it shares an open border with neighboring countries.

The three men have been booked under the NDPS Act and the authorities continue their investigation further to know more about the origin of the drugs and any further links with drug traffickers working in the area.

Officials in a statement said they will intensify anti-drug operations targeting the growing illegal drug trade in the northeastern states. The region has increasingly become a hotspot for drug smuggling, and law enforcement agencies are working towards preventing the flow of narcotics to protect the local communities from harmful effects of substance abuse.

The successful operation shows that law enforcement agencies are working hard to eliminate drug trafficking in Mizoram. Investigations are expected to reveal the larger network involved in the illegal trade.
