Aizawl: A tragic accident claimed the lives of All India Radio Aizawl artist and renowned song composer C Vanlalzuia (51) and his wife C Lalhmangaihzuali (51) in Champhai district, near Ngur village, bordering Myanmar, on Wednesday afternoon.
The couple was traveling in an auto-rickshaw driven by Vanlalzuia when the vehicle rolled down a steep gorge known as ‘Sathar kham’ or ‘goral ravine,’ on the road between Champhai town and Ngur village. Lalhmangaihzuali died instantly at the scene, while Vanlalzuia succumbed to his injuries later that evening at Champhai District Hospital, around 8:15 pm.
The couple’s funeral was held on Thursday at Champhai’s Vengthlang North neighborhood, where they were laid to rest. Vanlalzuia was a celebrated composer, having recorded several songs for All India Radio Aizawl and Lunglei. The loss has left a deep impact on the local community and the music scene in the region.
In a similar incident, the Indian Army rescued eight civilians after a truck carrying them plunged into a gorge near Khunku Naga village, Manipur, on Monday. The injured were promptly evacuated to a military hospital for medical treatment.
In related news, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari launched the "Cashless Treatment" scheme, covering up to ₹1.5 lakh for road accident victims, with ₹2 lakh for families of deceased victims in hit-and-run cases.
Gadkari also highlighted the alarming rise in road accident fatalities, particularly among young people, and the need for improved safety measures around schools, including stricter rules for school transport and identification of accident-prone areas.
