Mizoram: Woman Sentenced for 10 Years in Prison for Murdering Niece

It can be noted that Catherine was an orphan and her father had passed away a few years back, forcing her to stay with her aunt, who murdered her.

AIZAWL: A district and sessions court of Mizoram has slapped a ten-year prison sentence on a woman who murdered her niece. The perpetrator was identified as 38-year-old Chingsianzovi from the state.

According to reports, Sylvie Zomuanpuii Ralte, the Additional District and Sessions Judge for the Champhai district of the state was hearing the case. She slapped an additional fine of Rs 5000, failing to pay which will add a year to the prison sentence .

Chingsianzovi, a resident of Khawzawl town in eastern Mizoram had ordered 10-year-old niece Catherine to collect firewood while champing at a farmhouse. Because of the inadequate amount of firewood collected by the young girls, a heated quarrel began which resulted in Chingsianzovi choking her niece with the traditional ‘hnam’.

Although she had initially denied committing the crime, she finally confessed to the crime during the interrogation process after the police had discovered the body in the farmhouse and taken her into custody.

Although several charges were put against her, she was punished under Section 182 of the Indian Penal Code for trying to divert the investigation by providing false information to the police, She was finally convicted under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code for “culpable homicide not amounting to murder”. Her lawyers had argued that she did not kill the young girl intentionally, but the incident took place under the influence of alcohol.

Meanwhile in Guwahati, Paltanbazar Police on Thursday arrested the husband of the woman who had hung herself on Tuesday in a suspected dowry case. The incident took place on Tuesday night when one Bhagyalaxmi Duara had hung herself in her own room at their residence in the Bora Service locality of Lachit Nagar. Following the incident, the family of the dead woman alleged that she was murdered over dowry-related demands and that she was driven towards taking the extreme step because of the harassment for the same reasons by her in-laws. Investigating the incident, Guwahati Police on the morning of Thursday arrested the victim’s husband Nilim Medhi.
