DIMAPUR: The upgrade of Dimapur railway station into a world-class facility is scheduled to begin in the first week of March, officials announced. The decision was made during a coordination meeting involving NFR officials, Dimapur district administration, state transport officials, and civil society representatives at the Deputy Commissioner's office.

Re-development of the more than centuries-old railway station was delayed mainly on account of land-related issues. Dimapur station has been shortlisted for improvement under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and the central government has sanctioned Rs. 283 crore for the same.

Nilmani Brahma, Chief Engineer of NFR in Guwahati, said that the contract for the upgradation of the station has already been awarded, and work will start soon in the current financial year. The project is expected to be completed within three years. Brahma said that public cooperation is necessary, and residents should not construct illegal structures on railway land as it may hinder development.

The NFR has also been sanctioned to double the railway track between Lumding and Furkating in Assam, which will also pass through Dimapur. Deputy Commissioner Tinojongshi Chang said that the meeting discussed the issue of encroachment of railway land, and the administration and civil societies will work together to verify and settle the issues so that the station can be transformed.
