DIMAPUR: The Naga Hoho, an apex Naga body, has urged the Neiphiu Rio-led Nagaland government to initiate oil and natural gas exploration in the state, stating that such a move would significantly boost Nagaland's economy.

In a press statement, the apex Naga body stressed the need for stakeholder consultations to ensure economic independence for the Nagas. It highlighted that petroleum, oil, and natural gas are economically viable resources that could transform the state's financial landscape.

The Naga Hoho also called for a well-defined roadmap to resume oil exploration at the earliest. Regarding the ongoing discussions between the Assam and Nagaland governments on oil exploration and the sharing of royalties in the disputed border areas, the organization maintained that both states must collaborate to develop a mutually agreeable model.

Furthermore, the Naga Hoho asserted that oil exploration and production licenses should be signed by both state governments. Until such agreements are finalized, it demanded an immediate halt to all oil-related activities in the disturbed area belts.

Additionally, the apex Naga body insisted that the opinion of all Nagas should be considered when negotiating oil royalties, ensuring a fair and inclusive decision-making process. It further urged the Naga people to consider the benefits and potential impact on the local economy if fossil fuel deposits are found in Nagaland.
