KOHIMA: The Naga Mothers' Association (NMA) has expressed deep shock and condemnation over serious allegations of misconduct leveled against Professor Sarat Chandra Yenisetti, a faculty member of the Zoology Department at Nagaland University.
The association, representing the interests of women and the community at large, has called for immediate action to address these concerns.
In a letter sent to the President of India through the Governor of Nagaland, NMA raises grave accusations against Professor Yenisetti. The alleged abusive behavior of the teacher against a student and even against a female assistant professor creates an alarming situation that brings into question the security and safety of the human body within the university.
The association's letter bases its arguments on statements from leading university and student organizations, such as the Nagaland University Scholars' Forum (NUSF), Nagaland University Teachers' Association (NUTA), Nagaland University Non-Teaching Staff Association (NUNTSA), and the Naga Students' Federation (NSF). These organizations have publicly documented the alleged wrongdoing, thus lending credence to the accusations.
The NMA has strongly condemned the alleged criminal and sexual threats and acts of violence attributed to the professor. Terming the accusations as both reprehensible and damaging to the reputation of the university, the association called for stringent legal measures to be taken against Professor Yenisetti.
The NMA also expressed its criticism to the Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University in its letter for not uttering a word on this issue. The association wondered at the leadership's silence and lack of acknowledgment to the seriousness of the allegations, which could undermine the efforts to bring accountability and justice.
Some of the key demands of the NMA include the immediate termination of Professor Yenisetti from his employment at Nagaland University. The association strongly emphasized the need for drastic action to protect the academic environment, students, and staff and to save the university's credibility as an institution of learning.
The NMA appealed to the President of India, being the Visitor of Nagaland University, to intervene and seek justice. The association is confident that the President can ensure the rights and safety of women and students through decisive steps, such as directing the removal of the professor from his position.
The case under consideration here raises major concerns related to the security and safety of academic areas, particularly for women and young scholars. The strong protest raised by the NMA clearly shows that any such allegation should be met with due urgency so that justice is not only served but seen to be done.
The NMA's action sends a strong message that all forms of misconduct will not be tolerated in educational institutions. The association reiterates its commitment to providing a safer and more equal environment for everyone by demanding accountability. The decision in this case will attract much attention because it sets a precedent for institutional accountability and the protection of people in academic settings.
