KOHIMA: The 7th edition of the Winter Carnival cum Orchid Festival began with much enthusiasm at Carnival Village, Tepuiki River, Peren, organized by Progressive Peren (P2). The four-day event, running until December 12, promises a blend of cultural celebration and competitive activities.
Deputy Commissioner of Peren, Hiazu Meru, inaugurated the event, applauding the strong sense of unity displayed by the residents of Peren town. He lauded the ADC Peren and Progressive Peren for their efforts at community building. Highlighting the tourism sector's phenomenal growth, Meru was optimistic that Peren town would be one of the key destinations on the Nagaland tourist map and urged the residents and District Administration to join hands and achieve greater milestones.
The festival also recognized Retired Commissioner Secretary Khrienuo C. Metha as the guest of honor. The carnival lamp was lit officially by Meru, followed by Metha inaugurating the Orchid Festival, continuing the festivity.
Some of the interesting competitions which were organized on the day included ward-wise tug-of-war, strongman events, a snail eating contest, and an orchid competition that were well taken by the audience.
The programme was anchored by the progressive Peren Director Ngautube R. Champak, who initiated the event with a blessing prayer by Fr. Thomas, Parish Priest of St. Paul Church, Peren Town. A keynote address by ADC Peren, Keyirangding Hegui, added to the proceedings, as did a special melody performance by Kewizin Domta.
The Winter Carnival and Orchid Festival hope to reflect the cultural wealth of Peren while strengthening community unity and exploring the region's tourism potential.
