KOHIMA: In an ambitious effort to enhance governance and address the critical environmental concerns, the Nagaland Assembly has constituted two new committees on climate change and the effectiveness of local bodies.

Speaker Sharingain Longkumer emphasized the urgency of the steps, asserting that they reflect the Assembly's commitment to take governance to the masses.

The newly established Climate Change Committee will be responsible for leading parliamentary action to tackle the climate emergency. It will be responsible for scrutinizing bills on climate issues and assessing how well the government is meeting its climate targets.

The committee will seek to promote better air and water quality, especially in big rivers, and will back efforts like green budgeting, promoting electric vehicles, and sustainable farming.

At the same time, the Committee on Urban Local Bodies & Nagaland Village Councils will be working towards improving local governance and decentralization. The committee will address issues such as waste management, water supply, housing for the marginalized, traffic management, and pollution control in urban as well as rural areas. It is also expected to provide actionable recommendations to the government on pressing matters concerning local bodies.

Longkumer expressed optimism that the members of these committees, established on Saturday, would diligently address the critical challenges facing the region. In addition to these committees, the Speaker introduced 14 other financial and non-financial committees of the Assembly, along with the panel of chairpersons for the 2025-2026 term.
