KOHIMA: The Nagaland Assembly has decided to refer the issue of Nagas' ineligibility for Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) positions within the Central Postal Department to a select committee for further investigation.

This decision came after a proposal by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, in response to concerns raised by NPP MLA Tsielhoutuo Rhutso during a session on Tuesday.

The GDS selection process is an online process based on Class 10 merit. But Nagaland has not chosen any local or regional language as a third language, and as a result, local languages are not part of the selection process. Therefore, candidates from all over India who are proficient in English and Hindi can apply, which may set aside local candidates.

Chief Minister Rio identified that the involvement of outsiders in Nagaland usually results in difficulty in providing postal services efficiently as a result of language differences. This not only denies local residents necessary postal services but also restricts job opportunities for the young generation in the state.

Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer requested the approval of the House for the establishment of the select committee, which was agreed upon unanimously. The committee will take an in-depth review of the issue to examine possible solutions that would be able to address the issues raised by the local representatives and provide equitable opportunities for Nagas in the recruitment process of the GDS.
