DIMAPUR: Dimapur police have reported a substantial decrease in road-related accidents over the past three years, according to data for 2022, 2023, and 2024. The decline in vehicular accidents across Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland is attributed to a combination of road safety awareness campaigns and the installation of traffic infrastructure.

An important cause for such a decline is the efforts exerted on educating the youths to drive safely. The Dimapur police conducted awareness programs in over 60 educational institutions such as schools and colleges, educating children concerning the knowledge of traffic laws and safety on the roads.

It was also held for auto rickshaw and truck drivers through their respective unions, local churches, and public organizations. These were done during road safety week and enforcement drives along with the distribution of pamphlets and booklets.

Besides public education, Dimapur police improved the traffic management by installing solar-powered blinker lights at certain accident-prone spots and delineator lights at major junctions. Rumble strips were placed strategically to avoid traffic congestion, and convex mirrors helped the drivers to navigate through blind spots.

The police also observed speed restrictions especially during the festival season, but more so during December to rein in over-speeding. Special enforcement drives for over-speeding and drunk driving were conducted, which also contributed to the decline in accidents. The combined efforts of awareness campaigns and infrastructural improvements have played a vital role in reducing road traffic incidents in the region.
