KOHIMA: Nagaland has been awarded the prestigious Award of Excellence and Innovation in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) by the International Institute of Security and Safety Management (IISSM) for its remarkable contributions to disaster management. The award was presented during the 34th IISSM Annual Global Conclave, which took place on December 12 at the Taj Vivanta, Dwarka, New Delhi. The conclave will conclude on December 13.
Nominated by the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), this recognition highlights Nagaland’s impressive progress in disaster risk reduction. Key initiatives include developing financial resilience for disaster response, pioneering innovations in hazard preparedness, and collaborative efforts to enhance disaster mitigation, as noted in a press release by Lhouchalie Viya, Commissioner & Secretary of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA).
Sanjay Seth, Minister of State for Defence, Government of India, presented the award and praised Nagaland’s accomplishments. He commended the state for its commitment to building safer, more resilient communities and its proactive approach to addressing climate change and disaster-related challenges.
Seth remarked, "It demonstrates the government's commitment to building a safer and more resilient community by exemplifying a forward-thinking approach to addressing the challenges posed by climate change and disasters."
Nagaland’s Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, was invited as a distinguished guest to the award ceremony to receive the recognition. On behalf of the Government of Nagaland, officials from the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), including Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer, attended the event to receive the award.
The theme for this year’s Conclave, “Total Loss Prevention – Risk to Resilience,” focuses on addressing critical challenges of the 21st century, including climate change, disaster management, global security, and social equity.
