KOHIMA: Nagaland is set to introduce an Early Warning System (EWS) aimed at enhancing its disaster preparedness and providing timely warnings for different natural calamities. The move comes after a request from Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak, which was immediately supported by Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh.

The EWS will function as a crucial mechanism for issuing warnings related to a variety of disasters, including earthquakes, extreme weather events such as heatwaves and heavy rainfall, lightning strikes, landslides and other emergencies. Given Nagaland's vulnerability to these calamities, the system is anticipated to significantly enhance response measures, ultimately safeguarding lives and property.

Phangnon Konyak thanked Jitendra Singh for his prompt action, underlining the urgency required in disaster preparedness among residents in Nagaland. The execution of the EWS is expected to strengthen the detection and reduction strategies early, hence reducing the impact of natural calamities on the area.

The establishment of this system is a component of the broader effort to strengthen disaster management and resilience in areas prone to natural disasters. Through the enhancement of the capacity to issue timely warnings and effective responses, the EWS aims to create a safer environment for the people of Nagaland, making them better equipped to deal with the dangers of natural calamities.
