KOHIMA: Watinungsang from Nagaland has scripted history by becoming the first international cricket coach from Northeast India. He is currently working as the assistant coach of the South African cricket team and will soon take on a new role at the international level, marking a big achievement in his career.
Watinungsang, an expert in fast-bowling coaching, has created a special training method to increase bowling speed, earning international recognition. His dedication has set a new standard in cricket and inspired cricketers and coaches from less-represented regions.
His appointment comes just ahead of the highly anticipated South Africa Masters vs. Sri Lanka Masters match, scheduled to take place on February 26, 2025, at the D.Y. Patil Sports Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The match will be broadcast live on Jiostar and Colour Cineplex at 7:30 PM.
Watinungsang’s achievement is a moment of pride for Northeast India, showcasing the region’s growing influence in international cricket. As he steps into his new role, the cricketing fraternity eagerly awaits the impact of his coaching on the global stage.
Meanwhile, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Monday appointed an ad-hoc committee to manage the affairs of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) after the federation failed to conduct its elections on time.
The committee will be led by Jharkhand Olympic Association general secretary Madhukant Pathak. Other members include BFI vice-president Rajesh Bhandari, boxing officials DP Bhatt and Virendra Singh Thakur, and Assam boxer Shiva Thapa.
