KOHIMA: Menla Ethenpa, an Executive Member of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and President of the Sikkim Football Association, said on Wednesday that Northeast India is becoming an important football center in the country.
During the opening match of the ongoing Nagaland Super League (NSL) in Kohima, Ethenpa praised the state's thriving football scene and its commitment to promoting the sport.
While addressing the gathering, Ethenpa stressed the shared goal of Indian football to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. Showing strong support for women's football, he mentioned that the Indian women's team might reach this milestone ahead of the men's team.
Reflecting on Nagaland’s football legacy, Ethenpa honored Dr. T. Ao, India’s first football captain, encouraged young Naga footballers to uphold his legacy. Emphasizing the importance of grassroots development, he urged the Nagaland Football Association (NFA) to organize more football clinics and coaching programs.
The event was attended by Helievio Solo, Chairman of the Kohima Village Council, who was the match patron. The program began with a prayer by Rev. James C. Neikhrienyü, Senior Pastor of Baptist Mission Church, Kohima. Kethosituo Sekhose, Director of Youth Resources and Sports and a member of the NSL Governing Body, gave the welcome speech.
In the opening match in Kohima, Sechü Zubza FC kicked off their NSL campaign with a 2-0 victory over Red Scars FC at IG Stadium. After the match, Sechü Zubza captain of Kevisalie Sechü praised the NSL as an important platform for footballers and said his team would prepare better for the upcoming matches.
