Political Violence Reported From Nagaland During Assembly Polls

KOHIMA: The voting process began at 7 AM and ended at 4 PM on Monday for the assembly polls in the northeastern state of Nagaland. It remained mostly peaceful throughout the state except for one particular incident that took place in the state during the day.

According to reports from the state, a clash broke out between the supporters of the National People’s Party and the Naga People’s Front. The incident took place in the Bhandari constituency of the Wokha district of the state on Monday.

The situation turned tense in the region due to the clash. National People’s Party members and supporters were allegedly shot at by a group of Naga People’s Front supporters in the Bhandari constituency of the state. According to reports, multiple members of the National People’s Party were also injured in the incident.

Notably, a total of 305 companies from various security agencies were deployed at the polling stations across the state of Nagaland. This step was taken to ensure a smooth and fair voting process in the state following the multiple incidents of pre-poll violence from different parts of the Northeastern state. A total voter turnout of 73.65% of the voters of the state was reported till 3 PM on Monday.

The voting is being conducted at 2,291 polling stations across 59 constituencies spread across the state and will be ending by 4 PM today. The Chief Electoral Officer of Nagaland mentioned that cameras will be installed at all the critical as well as vulnerable polling stations of the state with capabilities of either webcasting or offline videography to ensure the prevention of any untoward incident.

A major fire also broke out in the centre of Kohima that led to the destruction of properties worth lakhs of rupees.
