KOHIMA: The Tizit constituency is expected to see a major contest in the upcoming assembly polls in the state of Nagaland. The Oting village of the constituency was the location where Indian army personnel gunned down several villagers in what was being called a case of mistaken identity.
The King of Oting, Tahwang, will contest from the Naga People’s Front, the cabinet minister of the previous government Paiwang Konyak will appear for the Bharatiya Janta Party and T Thomas Konyak will take the fight for the Congress.
The constituency of the state shares borders with neighbouring Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. And farming is the most important source of income for the constituency of the Mon district in the eastern part of the state.
Some of the main agendas for the polling campaigns include better road connectivity, education, healthcare and employment and the candidates have launched an array of promises to be fulfilled if they are elected.
Tahwang Angh expressed his confidence in being the first member of his family to win an election. His father had also contested unsuccessfully in several elections and so did his elder brother. He also mentioned that he will help the local people by ensuring special assistance to all the victims of the army operation including the families of those who perished as well as the injured ones.
Trade and commerce with both the neighbouring states are prime areas of concern of the Naga People’s Front as well as the Congress candidates. Accessible education is another key point on the agenda of Thomas Konyak.
"My mother is an ASHA worker and my father is a village guard. Both get stipends and have no fixed salary. I studied on a Nagaland government scholarship, for which also we had to fight as students. The youths cannot continue with their studies with so much of struggle. I want education to be available for all and employment opportunities after that," said Thomas Konyak.
Amit Shah and Sarbananda Sonwal have campaigned for Paiwang Konyak of BJP who promises to bring all the schemes of the central government to the people of the constituency.
