GANGTOK: Rajya Sabha MP Dorjee Tshering Lepcha of Sikkim has appealed to the Union Government to accord highest priority to the extension of railway network from Rangpo to Nathula as it is going to play a crucial role in ensuring all-weather connectivity, boosting tourism, and enhancing military logistics. Lepcha made this appeal during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

Nathula, situated at an elevation of 14,000 feet along the Indo-Tibetan border, is as much a tourist destination as it is a strategic place vulnerable to avalanches and extreme weather conditions. Lepcha pointed out that existing road connectivity now has ensured comfortable travel for both tourists as well as security personnel but remains vulnerable to weather fluctuations. "A railway extension would ensure uninterrupted access throughout the year," he stated.

The MP further noted that the rail link to Nathula would further boost the local economy as transport efficiency and cut travel time between places. "This will bring Sikkim closer to tourists and businesses, which will promote economic activity and employment in the region," he said.

He further added that the extension of this railway would give tremendous logistic support for armed forces in forward areas. He underlined that this project would integrate hill communities into the national framework while supporting local entrepreneurship.

Sevoke-Rangpo Rail project is nearing completion. A proposed extension from Rangpo to Gangtok is also under review. Lepcha appealed to the government to expedite the Nathula extension so that connectivity would be seamless and strategic advantages for Sikkim could be achieved.
