GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay’s flagship healthcare initiative, the 'Garib Jan Kalyan Prakosta,' has successfully provided free surgeries for over 1,200 patients suffering from various health conditions in Siliguri.
Patients traveling from Sikkim to Siliguri for gallbladder and kidney stone surgeries no longer have to bear any costs. The Prakosta will cover the full expense of the surgery, along with accommodation for the attendant and the cost of medicines.
Starting from Monday, the service for kidney stone patients was launched, with patients transported to Siliguri in two special SNT buses. A total of 32 patients were on board—ten with kidney stones and 22 with gallbladder stones.
Manoj Lama, chief coordinator of Prakosta, stated, “The project, led by the Chief Minister’s son Prabhakar Golay, has left no stone unturned in serving the poor and needy people of Sikkim. It was initiated by the Chief Minister following a review meeting at Mintokling with the Medical Assistance Scheme team of his office.”
In the meeting, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of ramping up efforts to assist those in urgent need of medical care. It was decided to organize monthly medical camps for stone surgeries at CRH Manipal Tadong, Kins Hospital Siliguri, and Neotia Getwel Multispeciality Hospital Siliguri, aiming to treat around 40 patients each month.
Additionally, plans were made to increase the number of medical caretakers in each constituency to enhance public access to healthcare services.
